The problem with a migraine is how similar the symptoms can be to a ‘bad headache’. When a sufferer of a migraine is told that they’re merely experiencing a bad headache, it can cause quite an annoyance. Sufferers of migraines can be often dismissed and given over the counter headache medication.
Knowing the difference between a painful headache and a migraine is very important. Migraines are usually composed of different stages, each leading to the next:
You may go through a sudden mood swing
A strange taste in the mouth is often reported, often followed by tiredness
You are likely to encounter impaired vision, a kind of ocular aura if you will
Images of flashing lights
The pain can get so unbearable that it can cause nausea and vomiting
In the midst of a migraine you can experience sensitivity to light, and sound. It is advised that you lay down for several hours, inside a dark, quiet room. Even after the migraine has calmed, symptoms such as nausea can still be experienced, and you’ll want to just go back to bed, due to prolonged tiredness following your migraine.
According to medical studies; during a migraine the blood vessels within the skull tend to dilate, causing areas of the head to grow very hot, during this sensation the hands, can be quite the opposite – very cold.
Even though migraines and headaches aren’t actually the same, they can have very similar ‘triggers’ – causations of the pain. Unsurprisingly migraines and headaches are usually caused by stress, and uncomfortable situations. Certain foods can also lead to migraines, e.g – chocolate, red wine and cheese. If you are noticing a pattern with your diet and your migraines, keep a record of dietary information, a food diary if you will – to help you identify the cause. In some cases concerning women, migraines have been linked to hormonal changes, and through the process of menstruation.
